About MediaShift

MediaShift is a free tool for converting and compressing video, audio and images. It was built for a simple reason: most online converters upload your files to their servers, and many of the files people convert, such as ID photos, exam signatures and personal videos, shouldn’t leave their device.

Key facts

  • MediaShift converts video, audio and image files inside the web browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly.
  • Files are never uploaded: conversion runs on the visitor’s own device.
  • It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no file-count limit.
  • After the first visit it works offline.
  • It can compress images to a target size such as 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB for online forms and exam portals in India.
  • It supports MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG, PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP and TIFF.

How it works

MediaShift uses FFmpeg, the open-source engine behind most video software, compiled to WebAssembly so it can run in a web page. When you drop a file, your browser reads it from your disk, FFmpeg converts it in memory, and you save the result. No server ever sees the file. The only things downloaded are the site itself and the FFmpeg engine, which your browser then keeps for offline use.
